When America sneezes...
...the world starts pointing the finger:

"It's those dirty pigs!"

"No, no, it's those dirty Mexicans!"

Looks like we should call it 'Smithfield flu'.

Though given that it must have formed in a creature part-man, part-pig, and part-chicken, a number of prominent personalities around the world spring to mind as possible donors of the eponym...

ETA: I overheard colleagues this afternoon talking about how someone wasn't too pleased at being sent home. I asked why he'd been sent home: because he'd just got back from holiday in Mexico and had been merrily showing people his holiday snaps. Heigh ho.

I saw that "kid kissing pig" picture on another site, but without the caption. Pretty funny! (But you won't see me kissing any pigs. I bet one CAN get swine flu that way, if the pig is infected.)

And now the new Disney movie, "The Princess and The Frog", may start a fad for little girls kissing frogs! I don't think there are any common diseases people get from frogs, though, fortunately.

Here is a great line from the article on pigs:
Smithfield, which is led by pork baron Joseph W Luter III, has previously been fined for environmental damage in the US.

Pork baron! What a great phrase!

My understanding is that the large-scale pig farms are so dirty that they've had to move to Mexico because Americans won't stand having them around. Unfortunately, Mexico's environmental protections aren't enough to keep them out from there.

As vegetarian, I'm starting to feel virtuous for protecting humanity from flu. No pig farms get support from me! (Well, I do eat eggs. But avian flu has never directly caused a human pandemic -- yet.)
