Go, Texas, Go!

While there are many wonderful Texans who I love, some of who are reading this, I have to admit that the thought of Texas seceeding from the U.S. gives me great pleasure. And, yes, I know that plenty of people say the say thing about California.

Actually, not very many people outside the electricity industry know this, but Texas is ideally suited to be a sovereign nation in one respect -- electricity. There are three electric grids in North America: East, West, and Texas. Each grid is pretty much completely interconnected, but has only very limited connections to the other two. Thus, Texas is its own system, and unlike all the other states and regions can't really buy or sell electricity from others. See? A sovereign nation, electrically speaking. And with any luck, politically speaking, too.

As the travel commercials used to say, "Texas -- it's like a whole 'nuther country!"

Hmmm, if Texas really did become a separate country, would it have the world's highest per-capita execution rate? Currently, the world's highest per-capita execution rate is in Singapore, which executes about 13 people per million each year. Most executions there are for chewing gum in public drug offenses.)

I see W presided over 152 in six years as Governor, so 25 per year. The population is now around 24 million (it owuld have been slightly less under Bush) so the corresponding statistic is about 1, unless they've shot up since.

Singapore - bigger than Texas (on the only metric that counts).

Thanks, David. (I hunted around a bit for Texas execution statistics, but I didn't find any convenient ones right away, and I was lazy.)

Remind me never to visit Singapore...

The thing that amazes me is "But if Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, you know, who knows what might come out of that."

By and large, "Washington" has, in the last few months, been doing what they said they'd do if elected. I know Perry is just using the old strategy of assertion (If he says they're thumbing their nose at me, they must have been), but these people still don't get that they lost an election, not a palace coup.

Oh, and by the way, do East and West include Canada and Mexico?
